About the client

Richard Kinsley is a wedding photographer based in Essex, with over 20 years in the profession.

The project brief

This project was a redesign of Richard’s old website, which was a pre-made theme bought from a design firm. Richard had reached the limit of what was possible with the existing website and wanted something more visually appealing which would show off his photos to their potential.

Apart from the design overhaul, Richard also wanted a much better site structure for his SEO campaign. The old website had obscure URLs and poor HTML, none of which were helping, and consequently a lot of money was being invested into Google AdWords to combat this.

How I met the brief

In our initial meeting on the phone we agreed a dark colour scheme which would consist mainly of dark grey, light grey and a deep, rich gold. I redrew the logo in Adobe illustrator because the original files could not be found, and began work on the design.

When designing the home page I knew I wanted to make a very obvious feature of the images, so I made them very large! The idea was that the slider on the home page would be created using images from the 4 most recent blog entries, giving fresh content which is easy to maintain in the admin area. I decided to go a step further and introduce a “sticky menu” – this means when the user scrolls down the page, but instead of the navigation going off the screen as it normally would, it is placed permanently at the top of the page.

The HTML was a complete overhaul of the old website, giving much better potential for the site to rank well in search results. The HTML attribute “date” has been added to all blog posts on the website, letting Google know exactly when the articles have been published.

The two column layout on the home page and the columns in the footer are all widget-ready, so Richard can maintain everything with ease. I built several widgets specifically for Richard’s WordPress theme such as: easy video embedding, feature an image and display recent gallery images. This modular system is very simple to use.

Notable features

  • A rather unique slider solution on the home page, which when the user scrolls down, pulls the page over the top whilst fading out the image to gold. It’s not that easy to explain, so just try it out!
  • Highly customisable theme with several widget areas for a high level of control.
  • Vastly improved SEO potential and URL structure.
  • One of my favourite designs to date, which (I think) showcases Richard’s photography beautifully.
